Disney Pulls Planned Princess Tiana Series

A previously announced Princess Tiana series on Disney+ starring Anika Noni Rose has been shelved...

Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially pulled the plug on its Tiana princess series as it abandons making original longform content for streaming, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
A spokesperson confirmed there will be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio as a result of this shift in business strategy. In addition to the Tiana series, the studio is also scrapping an unannounced feature-length project that was set to go straight to Disney+.
Tiana was first announced in December 2020, and was envisioned as a musical featuring Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, the film centering on Disney’s first Black princess.
Sources close to the streaming series say that despite best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs.
Still, The Princess and the Frog remains a key property for the company, as Tiana is one of Disney’s canon princesses. Last year, the Splash Mountain attraction was revamped at both of Disney’s U.S. parks and transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
The animation studio is said to developing a separate shortform special inspired by The Princess and the Frog, which is currently in early development. Though details of the project remain under wraps, it’s expected to feature all-new storytelling based on the 2009 film with Joyce Sherri attached as director and writer, and Steve Anderson also directing.

You people voted for this racist activity. On Biden's or Harris' WORST day they would not do any of this!

^^^ Can you read? This is a shift in business strategy and they're planning another - probably better- series in the future.

@8:46. I hear you. I think this is part of Disney's "roll back" on DEI and this is the news Trump (Stephen Miller and Musky) want to hear, no matter how they dress it up as a shift in business strategy.

Biden and Harris wouldn't be ALLOWED by Congress or the Judicial system to do this.

Trump 1.0 (from 2016 to 2020) locked this up with the hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS) of conservative judges he appointed. That's why Trump is able to move forth with Project 2025 ..... and DISNEY is part of those moves.

I hope Anika Noni Rose got paid. We rode the elliptical cardio machine together a couple of times back when Bally's was gym. She's verry nice.
There is no reason why this couldn't have played out on their channel. Those of you who are woke can read between the lines. Those that chose to live in the world of denial will wise up when the rug has been snatched from underneath your feet. LOLO

Yes this is a DEI pushback. You can expect many more of them as corporations try to placate Trump. I can't believe they're doing this to Anika, one of B'way's original Dreamgirls. She got screwed by HBO years ago with that African show she did with Jill Scott.

Lucky you getting to workout with Anika. She's so talented. I just watched her in Power and she is just so damn good, I hope she got paid, too.

I hate Trump that man. Him and Elon are both racist and that whole cabinet he appointed. And all those punk congressmen. Especially the one that made them change the Black Lives Matter Plaza to Liberty Plaza. And will paint over the Black Lives Matter words painted on the street. The one that wants to put Trumps face on the 100 dollar bill. Project 2025 like we tried to tell so many is real. But so many got cussed out and bragged Trump will lower my groceries and gas prices. They are out to see how much money they can make from the government and they illegal means by getting rid of the departments that would investigate and hold them responsible. I didn't like Harris but I would love to see her face right about now.

I don't think Anika was one of the original Dreamgirls. I think the originals were Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine but I hear you and Anika deserves this project. This rollback on DEI is one damm mess.

She wasn't one of the originals. She would be close to 70yrs old now. Ppl come on post with miss information. That's how lies get started.

^^^It could have been a mistake. Relax.

I'm on my way to stock up on can goods before prices sky rocket. Some ppl have to learn the hard way. Pain and suffering is not part of my living conditions. It will be a ruff 4yrs. That's if he leaves office. January 6th will happen all over again.

What a shame. Abandoning DEI and disguising it as a strategic business decision. Sure Jan...

Stop giving Disney your money. THEY HATE YOU.

^ If they hated us they wouldn't have had a Black princess to begin with. They might be a shady company but not ever dam thing is racist.

@12:16. Come again, bi'h?

Disney’s history of racist caricatures and ethnic stereotyping has been well documented and routinely criticized: the crows in Dumbo that drew on racist minstrel caricatures of Black Americans; the Islamophobic tropes in Aladdin; the mockery of Native Americans in Peter Pan … the list goes on.

And this is well before Disney even thought about having a Black princess.

I said what I said. Not every dam thing is racist. Critical thinking is a flex.

Imagine needing a BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATE CONGLOMERATE to validate your culture πŸ₯΄.... Disney won't turn a FLOP movie into a FLOP TV show ... that is somehow infringing on your right to exist as a black person? It offends you? lmao b-b-b-ut what about Lion King? Didn't 'BLM' and 'DEI' woke politics usurp the entire Lion King Universe? Am I remembering correctly?? Didn't King Beyonce turn Lion King's 30 year legacy of brilliant animation, an outstanding soundtrack and an incredible Broadway production into a cheap attempt at pandering to black people by pretending that the Lion King was only meant for black culture??? When is enough enough?? Newsflash Disney will sell promote and propagate whatever idea gets butts in seats and money in the bank, no matter how morally or socially divisive it might be.
This is a business. Disney is losing money & shareholders ultimately make the decision… you think they like you because they made a character that looks like you? Hmmm I guess it’s working lol. money talks. Disney+ has had multiple failures in scripted new shows. So no, not this time. Not that character.

The Lion King is from African Culture, think Disney ain't know it? Don't believe the hype, it wasn't from Hamlet, but believe what you want.

"But what fans don’t know is that the story of “The Lion King” is not just a great story — it’s a true story.

As the movie once again captures the public imagination, it is time to use it as a way to take seriously African history, a topic that is sorely missing from our educational curriculum. A study of precolonial African history would re-center our understanding of the past away from a skewed narrative about the supremacy of European rulers, one that limits our vision of the past and future.

The story of Sundiata Keita is behind “The Lion King.” Known as the Lion of Mali, Sundiata was the founder of the Malian Empire, the largest kingdom in West Africa. He ruled his empire, which expanded from the Atlantic coast all the way to the Niger River, from 1235 to 1255. Some may know of his great-nephew, Mansa Musa, who was the richest person to ever live in the history of the world. According to Forbes, Musa’s fortune was estimated at $400 billion, adjusted for inflation. During his famous pilgrimage to Mecca, he built mosques in his wake and gave away so much gold that the price of gold was devalued for the next 25 years."

@10:48 This is a good idea.

3:02 no prob. You’re 100% right … it is a flex.

The lion king was not deep rooted in the diaspora. It payed respect to the culture but the movie was an allegorical tale about lions starring a diverse cast of talent from around Hollywood. The Broadway musical was obviously toted as a homage to African folklore but even that was done tasteful as a sort of reinterpretation of the story in a meaningful way that gave it more cultural gravitas which in the 90s was literally the name of the game. But equating the entire lion king intellectual property to some sort of cultural steeped feat of black excellence is simply revisionist history. It was great but it was great because of the chemistry between all the cast and the audiovisual harmony of the production.Ya’ll don’t see East Asians claiming the Nickelodeon’s anime Avatar show a work of authentic East Asian storytelling….because they know the writers exploited various elements of different cultures from around Asia in order to create a very generic wide, appealing story with characters and concepts that felt vaguely familiar and reminiscent of the proverbial Asian lore.

Only black people cling to these cultural institutions seeking validation when all Disney wants to do is sell you some merch… it’s deeply disturbing.

Ya’ll want this to be the 1619 Project but it’s not.

Culture is dead smh. Ya’ll killed it.
