KeKe Palmer Admits Childhood Super Stardom Made Her Hate Her Parents for a Long Time

Actress KeKe Palmer admits the pressure of being the family bread winner as a child star, caused her to hate her parents for a long time...

From People
Keke Palmer has some ups and downs in her relationship with her parents.
The second of Sharon and Larry Palmer's four children, Keke, 31, felt some major pressure after she landed her breakout role in Akeelah and the Bee in 2006, which she followed up with 2008's True Jackson, VP on Nickelodeon, which truly launched her into child stardom — and solidified her as the primary breadwinner for her family.
The actress told The Cut that there was "so much pressure to rise to the occasion for my community, for my parents, for my siblings, for their sacrifices" that it led to hatred on her end.
“I hated my parents for a long time," she admitted.
Though her loved ones "weren't saying" that the pressure was on her, "that was the reality," and she knew it. "Because I’m the one that we all came here for."
Her challenges within her family dynamic led her to identify particularly well with her Nickelodeon character, a 15-year-old high school student who is put in charge of a major fashion brand.
“She was climbing a corporate ladder, working a grown-up job as a kid. I felt the same way,” Keke told the outlet of True Jackson, who she played for two seasons from 2008 to 2011.
"She was making it happen for herself independently in the world. Growing up with that character — it bled over into how I wanted to show up, how I want to deal with life."

She’s an adult brat. If it wasn’t for them she’d be somewhere on 15th and Normandy. (Is that an actual intersection? I’m just talking ish)

^^^Haha! Yeah, I'm sure she appreciates them now. Just like I'm sure the Jacksons' kids at one point hated Joe but they wouldn't have achieved their success without him.

That’s crazy cause my kidz felt some kinda way until they had they own kidz. Now they be trying to sing my praise and ask advice on how to handle their problems. I meant to say handle my grand children. Oh well. Figure it out.

Parents just don’t understand

Never cared for KP, despite her being from the CHI.

Uhhh. She mental.

I never knew who she was until she wasn't getting any work as an adult. She came off annoying while listening to her talk or maybe I should say gripe about no acting roles for as an adult.

Children should not be Head of Household.

I’m trying to see that movie though. On Netflix.

Looks funny.

She wasn’t no head of household.

Her parents saw talent. She should be grateful she isn’t checking out store products at the register. If she is tired of acting who is stopping her from leaving?
All kids hate their parents as kids and you were not head of household, Keke Palmer. Be glad you had strong influences that kept you doing productive things in life and not a baby momma with no talent.

I'm sure that both of her parents held jobs.

I'm not a fan of hers and I think she does too much sometimes. But I totally understand what she's saying about being resentful towards her parents. Yes, they may have helped her career get started but once she started big making money, her folks probably treated her like a bank and may have expected her to fund everything they wanted. This happened to me when I became the most successful person in my immediate family. I've been there, done that and was expected to support the entire family --even some working adults. This happens in a lot of oversees cultures too with Asians, Middle Easterners, Caribbeans and Africans.
