Prince Estate Rejects Netflix Documentary

The Estate of Prince has pulled the plug on an upcoming documentary on Netlfix...

From Variety
A six-part Prince documentary for Netflix directed by Ezra Edelman is “dead in the water” after representatives for the late artist’s estate claimed a first cut of the film was filled with “dramatic” factual inaccuracies and “sensationalized” renderings of certain events from his life, sources close to the situation tell Variety.
Edelman, best known for the “O.J.: Made in America” documentary, has been quietly working on the film for four years and is said to be “devastated” by the impasse.
While the deal for the documentary calls for a six-hour series, Edelman instead delivered nine hours, a violation of the agreement that presumably enabled the estate to withhold music rights. Although Netflix and Edelman maintain final cut of the film, a Prince documentary without his music would face daunting, if not insurmountable, creative and commercial obstacles.
The original deal for the documentary, which was never officially announced but reported exclusively by Variety in 2018, was made between Netflix and representatives of Comerica Bank, the interim executor for Prince’s estate. Edelman, who was enlisted to replace original director Ava DuVernay, was given extensive access to Prince’s archives and produced a cut of the film that was screened recently for insiders.
Details on the alleged inaccuracies were not clear, but an unnamed source insisted to Puck that “it’s not revelations of drug use or sexual stuff.” Instead, sources tells Variety that the estate felt strongly that certain events had been “sensationalized” and not properly fact-checked, and that those claims were met with opposition by Edelman. On the other hand, different sources told Puck and Variety that the issues were more about “control,” and the estate felt the documentary was not sufficiently positive.

I don't trust the family. They have been unashamedly making money by releasing material Prince kept under cover and by licensing his music to anyone who's interested. They don't care about the truth. They want to make money for decades to come. Prince and Michael thought they were invincible.

I don't want to see, nor will I accept anything not positive about Prince. If they were trying to disparage him or any event connected with him, I'm ok with this outcome. Prince minded his own business and WAS NOT with the bull$it^. He deserves a respectable documentary, if one was to be done

Can’t win with even the idea. He’d oppose any of it so I’m good. Honor him with the music I’ll know forever

@ 1:24 Prince's family owns very little of the rights to his music. They all sold out. Even Tiyka sold a large portion of her share.

^Thank you. I didn't know, but I'm not surprised.

I'm pretty sure the family blocked this because the documentary is going to bend over backwards to try and convince the viewers that Prince was an addict.

@1:24 When I first heard Kiss playing in some random commercial, my first thought was Prince's family sold him out. I know they want to make money but at least respect the man's wishes.

The estate did exactly what Prince would have wanted and pulled the pull. Not today Karens. Netflix somewhere looking stupid as they should be. That Purple Rain still stopping traffic even from heaven...☔☔☔

@541. His family couldn't care less about Prince's thoughts, feelings, beliefs. They are here for the money. Yes, I've heard his songs in commercials, too... Child, don't get me started.

Prince was no angel. He was private for a reason, and I know this as a fact. People grow up and grow out. If the TRUTH came out some of yall would be mortified. The family is trash and always has been. He didn’t want to appear to be the same junkie the rest of his family is.

His family is NOT the same as the estate. His family sold Prince out as soon as they got a dime. 💯

Nah we ready⌛ Mayte's mom had Mayte gifted wrapped with a underaged bow BUT he didn't touch her until she was legal. They perused Prince outside a venue and her mom had her to dance for him while he was walking outside from a club. When she turned legal then he more than touched her but he also married her and then her family moved in. Much like Kobe did with his wife that he use to pick up from her high school. Prince wasn't perfect, but he also wasn't stupid.☔ Unlike Micheal, kids weren't sharing his bed. And I'm a fan of both. So all you Micheal fans don't get mad. Mike admitted to sleeping with kids in sleepovers he shouldn't have been having when that no good Martin Bashir tricked him into saying it. None of these entertainers are role models or idols 💯
