Lil Nas X Happy for Beyoncé Country Music Chart Success Wishes It Could Have Happened for Him

Back in 2019 Billboard famously blocked rapper Lil Nas X's smash hit record, "Old Town Road," from the Country Music charts despite its obvious country and western elements [click here if you missed that].

Lil Nas reflects on Beyoncé and Shaboozey's country music success and wishes he had received the same welcome...

From The BBC
For singer and rapper Lil Nas X, five years after releasing Old Town Road, it's still his most talked-about track.
The 25-year-old's country-trap hit also remains the longest-running number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, after spending 19 weeks on top.
Despite the song's success in the pop realm, its exclusion from the US country music charts sparked fierce debate at the time of its 2019 release.
Fast forward to 2024 and there has been country chart success for two Black artists in recent months.
One is Beyoncé, whose track Texas Hold 'Em made history by spending 10 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
She was dethroned by another Black artist, Shaboozey, with A Bar Song (Tipsy).
Lil Nas X tells the BBC he's "happy" for these two artists.
"But I wish this would have happened for me. I wasn't even able to experience this," he adds.

It did happen. The guy topped Mariah's record for most weeks at #1. His lack of success is self inflicted.

5:46 agreed. I’m sure he wanted his target audience to be adults but in reality, kids love his music. I don’t know any adults that streams his music. And just like parents don’t want their kids watching women shake their naked azzes on their tv screens, they d@mn sure don’t want their kids watching him do that ish either.

5:46 PM, that part right there. The antics on the second song is what killed you. Get back in the studio and stop acting a fool.

He paved the way so he should be proud. OTR is in the history books. It was such a massive single thats why it caught Billboard attention. It is however still country. It has a hip hop drum beat but that guitar melody is pure western country. Billboard was wrong.
