Kevin McCarthy has for now lost the House speaker’s gavel in a historic moment on the heels of a showdown on Capitol Hill over government funding.
The California Republican, who was up against major challenges, including tough vote math and a conservative revolt against his speakership, was ousted in a 216-210 vote, with eight Republicans voting to remove McCarthy from the post.
The House will now need to elect a new speaker. The House GOP will have a conference meeting Tuesday night, according to sources, although the election is not expected to happen on Tuesday.
When has this happened before: The last time a high-profile showdown played out on Capitol Hill over a motion to vacate was in 2015 when then-GOP Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina filed a resolution to declare the office of speaker vacant while John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, was serving as speaker. It was not brought to a floor vote, however.
Another notable incident took place in 1910, when then-House Speaker Joseph Cannon, an Illinois Republican, held onto the speakership after a resolution to remove the speaker came to a vote on the House floor and failed – 155 to 192.

I love this. The Far Right’s move to shut down the government backfired and they’re in the middle of a civil war within their party.
Trump wanted the Far Right to shut down the government and then blame it on Biden. McCarthy, like most weak-ass Republicans, knew that plan was a disaster for Americans and was not worth the havoc it would create. So he worked with Democrats to keep the government running. Now the crybabies, directed by Trump, are having a tantrum and they kicked out the only person acting in the interest of Americans who is willing to say no to Trump.
So out he goes. I think he was ready to give it up and I don’t blame him. Let’s see what they do now.

The spending bill that was passed did NOT include aid for Ukraine, and the far right extremist STILL wanted the govt shut down. Stop believing their lies. This was never about Ukraine, this about a group of right wing extremists trying to hold our country captive. McCarthy, for all his flaws, was not willing to bend on a govt shutdown, hence, why he was ousted. But ya know, I'm glad Republicans did this. It shows Americans exactly who they are, and what they value. If they thought the Dems swept them in 2020, just wait until next year. These idiots literally handed the Democrats, Congress and the presidency in 2024. And their head Cheeto in charge will be in prison by Christmas of '24.

Speaker? Trump wants to be President and nothing less. He loved flying around in Airforce One with MFs treating him like he was the leader of the free world. He loved the everyday attention he got. He will have no less.
Short of that, Trump wants to start a revolution/civil war. I think he’ll be successful if Republicans keep caving in to his demands.
Democrats need to come up with a plan.

Here's the good news: Trump CAN'T be Speaker because he was "indicted for a felony for which a sentence of two or more years imprisonment may be imposed". 😁 However, Republicans who I think are corrupt enough to try to change that rule, would have to get enough votes in the House to change it.

@538. I don’t think he would be SoH even if he could be. Trump wants to be POTUS or a dictator. Anything less is beneath him in his mind. And most people eligible to be Speaker are political junkies who can tell you about congressional debates dating back to the 1800s, the wars we’ve been through, Reconstruction, the Sufferage movement, things that Congress has had to address. Trump can’t even debate properly and would be like a lost puppy in the U.S. Congress. It’s too much work for him. I just don’t see this happening.
I know some of you political junkies hate seeing some us discuss politics. TOO BAD. We have opinions, too!

Trump went to DC to throw his power around and to support someone who would do the work for him, as usual.
And now Jordan has received Trump’s support. Jordan has more connections and power than Scalise (the other Republican who wants to be Speaker), Jordan is smarter than Scalise, and Jordan is a lot more dangerous than Scalise.
I hope almost anyone else but Jordan gets the job but it will really depend on the moderate Republicans. They will be the deciders of how this plays out.
