Berry Gordy Files $10 Million Defamation Lawsuit Over 'Spinning Gold' Biopic

Motown founder Berry Gordy filed a $10 million defamation of character lawsuit after he is portrayed as a thug in the biopic about Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart...

Legendary music executive Berry Gordy has filed a bombshell $10 million lawsuit over a film that portrayed him as a thug, RadarOnline.com has learned.
According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Gordy is suing Timothy Bogart, the son of late music exec Neil, Hero Entertainment and Universal City Entertainment Group over a 2023 film called Spinning Gold.
Gordy’s lawsuit accuses the defendants of defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
In his suit, Gordy explains he has worked with everyone from The Supremes to Marvin Gaye — and even founded Motown Records.
Gordy said Timothy Bogart produced Spinning Gold which focuses on his father Neil Bogart’s record label Casablanca Records.
The film was released in the Spring of 2023 and released by Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.
Gordy said Timothy has said about the film “Every bit of it is true, even the parts that aren’t.”
However, Gordy said the film presents false narratives and defamatory fiction as truth. He said the film created a “made-up storyline in which Gordy is wrongfully and dishonestly portrayed as a thug and a mobster who goes so far as to order a murder for hire. The Picture is unlikely to be a commercial or artistic success. However, the picture does succeed in defaming and otherwise causing great damage to Gordy.”
Gordy accuses Timothy of creating a false subplot that portrayed him as a gangster and a thug.
He said one scene had him “putting a hit out” on Neil “purportedly because Casablanca Records lured the Isley Brothers and Gladys Knight away from Motown to join the anemic roster of artists at Casablanca.”
“None of this is true and [Gordy] is not, and has never, associated with criminals or criminal behavior, and there certainly was never any solicitation of murder by, or, on the part of, [Gordy],” the suit reads.
“The negative portrayals of [Gordy] and the insertion of the scene concerning Plaintiff “putting out a hit” is a vile, reckless and baseless character assassination in the desperate attempt to create drama where non exists in a lackluster Picture. This wrongful and illegal content in the Picture has caused severe damage to [Gordy] and to [Gordy’s reputation,” the suit read.
Gordy is demanding in excess of $10 million.

Yuup, hit them culture vultures in they pockets. Another one that wants to attack Black heritage because of jealousy. No one ever talks about this record label as being important to the pop culture. Using Motown for clout to promote his daddies label.
If he wants to do something then revive the record label or start a new one. Just leave our ppl alone. Yt trash at it's finest.

"The Picture is unlikely to be a commercial or artistic success" Who knows this for sure? I'd watch it.

Not everything I've heard was good.

Gordy took the bait.

These studios are not stupid. They knew he would file a lawsuit but they also know that a lawsuit is great publicity for the movie. I'd never even heard of this film til today. This Barry Gordy lawsuit is the top entertainment story on every blog this morning. The studio is probably hoping Bary will do a few interviews on Sheri and Tamron to really drum up the publicity! Lol

Neil Bogart and his wife snorted up every dime Donna Summer made and left her broke. Berry Gordy was a gangster but not that obviously. He needs to win this case.

Good for Gordy. But interesting no one is vilifying Gordy like they would be anytime Diddy comes up. Diddy or LaFace today is the same as Gordy and Smokey then and how all those artists die poor. It’s all about contracts… simple

Did Tyler Perry contribute to the wig situation?

Karma for what he did to: Flo (she was due royalty payments and died broke), Gladys (he gave her and The Pips old-azz, used-up songs), The Isley Bros (see Gladys), Martha Reeves (she was the best female singer at Motown but Berry wouldn't promote her because he was in luuuuuv with Diana), the Jackson Five (Michael didn't really bloom and develop till he left Motown and hooked up with Quincy Jones). Stevie and Marvin had to beg Berry to produce their own music.

Don't get me started on Berry and his smothering, cheap and greedy azz. Ugh.

I will check out this movie. I never liked Berry Gordy because of how he treated his artists. He should not be celebrated.
