Last year rapper Future sold the publishing rights to his entire music catalogue [click here if you missed that].
Now Dr. Dre is in negotiations to sell his publishing rights...
From Variety
Dr. Dre is selling a collection of music income streams and other assets in a deal that was being pitched for $250 million, sources confirm to Variety.
The assets, which generate nearly $10 million annually, are being acquired by Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group in two separate transactions. The deals, which have been rumored for several weeks, are said to be nearly closed and were shopped by Dre’s longtime attorney Peter Paterno of King, Holmes, Paterno & Soriano.
The assets are said to include artist royalties from two of his solo albums and his share of N.W.A. artist royalties; his producer royalties; and the writer’s share of his song catalog where he doesn’t own publishing, which may include songs from his 1993 blockbuster album “The Chronic.” According to Billboard’s sources, that portion includes 75% to 90% of the package’s revenue and is likely being acquired by Shamrock (which owns some Taylor Swift master recordings), with UMG acquiring the remaining 10% to 25%.
Included in UMG’s acquisition would be the master recording of “The Chronic,” which is scheduled to revert to Dre from Death Row Entertainment (which recently was acquired by Dre’s protégé Snoop Dogg last year) in August of this year; his share of an Aftermath/Interscope joint venture with the Top Dawg label for Kendrick Lamar releases through that deal; and possibly some other assets. It does not include his ownership stake in the Aftermath label, which he co-owns with his longtime label home, UMG’s Interscope Records.

This is kind of ironic considering the cease and desist order Dre sent to Marjorie Taylor Greene, for usage of his music for political ads. I respected Dre for his handling in that situation, but, now I'm wondering how that was connected to this? 🤔
Well after he sells it, she’s definitely gonna use it again.
White celebs don't do stupid sh*t like this. This is literally generational wealth that he's handing over. What about his lineage? This is why Black people will never prosper in this country. The second we get a foot in the door, we cash out.
Many don't know Snoop wrote most of The Chronic and didn't get paid. Let's hope Snoop finally gets his royalties.
White celebrities do this all the time. It leaves your money free for investment. Even Bob Dylan has sold his catalogue.
Does his ex wife get any part of it?
Why not pass it to your children? Geesh! Talk about giving away generational wealth. SMH
In this case the ex who is white got him for a lot of money and then some. M’chelle should be getting a cut since he cheated her out of money owed.
Take the money and get estate planning invest and live well. He dont got much time. he going to Panama for treatments to help with that steroid shit
He is not obligated to pass anything to his children.Im pretty sure he's already made allowances for them if not it's his money
Thought he was a billionaire 🤔. Why sell your catalog if you're that wealthy already? Is it because all these celebrities claiming massive wealth are full of lies?

Your comment is beyond ignorant. 🤣The post actually names a white celebrity that sold parts of her catalogue and she isn't the only one. Many highly successful artists do this to get their cash sooner than later or never to use for other purposes such as investments. It certainly doesn't stop them from passing generational wealth to their heirs. Who taught you to only think negatively of people who look like you? Educate yourself.
Odd to consider selling the music rights. Ten milly every year would be major for most of us. Plus the Beat headphone money. My dude what's going on??!
As time passes 10 a year will become 9.34 which will become 8.27 which will become 7.49 this is how things work he is getting 25 years upfront as if nothing will ever change and as was exampled above things will change and not for the better but over time as the relevance of the intellectual property fades or as it ages the earnings will fade also if he is smart he will put the money to work earning for him. He is like the corleone family he made his fortune walloying in the mud (Gansta Rap) and now he is distancing himself from the genre and all the negative connotations that come with it to paly in the big money game of business.
@1:06 remember white peole had the luxury of not being hated for no other reason than being who they were so they could be gangsters or participate in some other grey area and then later go legit. Black people and hood people are the only ones screaming ball til you fall like the hustle was meant to last forever. this is as close as he could get to gangsterism without going out like Young Thug he had to endure C.Delores Tucker and the PMRC and the black community and the politicians and the church, but its better than the dealing with the FBI, DEA and IRS. Hopefully he can navigate the business world and dabble at a little music from time to time.
