Azriel's parents claim their daughter was a few months shy of her 18th birthday when she began meeting R. Kelly without their permission and then threatened to kill herself after they found out and tried to intervene. They also claim Azriel lied to them repeatedly about the nature of her relationship with R. Kelly after he pressured them to allow her to go on tour with him to help her singing career.
Azriel's mother told Gayle King that Azriel and R. Kelly's other girlfriends have a suicide pact and her father graphically described Azriel's prior suicide attempt before she met R. Kelly.
