John Legend Producing Black Wall Street Series
Producer John Legend is following his successful WGN series Underground, about the lives of runaway slaves in Georgia, with a new series based on another important piece of American history - the infamous destruction of a wealthy Black community in Tulsa, Ok dubbed the 'Black Wall Street..'
Following World War I Black U.S. citizens living in segregated Tulsa, OK created a wealthy economic enclave so successful it was known across the country as the "Black Wall Street.'
That is, until a mob of white men stormed the neighborhood on May 31 and June 1 in 1921 and lynched over 300 men, women and children and burned hundreds of businesses to the ground.
Spoiler Alert: The area never recovered, no one was ever charged or any compensation given to the business owners or their families.
John Legend's Black Wall Street is currently in development.
