Just two days ago, Etterlene “Mama D” DeBarge’s son, El DeBarge, called his mother, very upset about what would be his last contact with his friend Whitney Houston.
The DeBarges, from Grand Rapids, were one of the top pop and R&B groups of the 1980s. El in particular has been friends with Houston for years.
“She had said, ‘El, would you help me? I need your help, El,’” Mama D said in a phone interview from her California home on Sunday, a day after Houston died at 49.
“She needed spiritual help from El, who has a very strong spirit. Whitney has always been able to relate to El because they both came up in the church.”
