Remembering Aaliyah

Ten years ago today R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton died in a plane crash off the island of Bahamas...

On August 25, 2001 Aaliyah and members of her entourage boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B at Marsh Harbour, Abaco Bahamas after completing the video for Aaliyah's new single "Rock the Boat". The group was originally scheduled to leave the island the following day, but when filming finished early, Aaliyah and her entourage decided to leave immediately. The newly arraigned flight was on an airplane smaller than the one they'd flown in on but the entire party and all of the equipment were loaded onto the aircraft anyway. Overloaded by 700 pounds and carrying one more passenger than it was certified to carry, the plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing Aaliyah and the eight others on board, pilot Luis Morales III, hair stylist Eric Forman, Anthony Dodd, security guard Scott Gallin, video producer Douglas Kratz, stylist Christopher Maldonado, and Blackground Records employees Keith Wallace and Gina Smith,
