Turns out Kanye West really was a surprise guest at Jay Z's Las Vegas Show on New Year's Eve, which may explain why he was looking so bummy that night.

Kanye West popped up in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve as a guest star during the Jay-Z/Coldplay concert at the Cosmopolitan, after negotiations for him to play at the Gansevoort Park Avenue hotel here fell through. Sources said West wanted a large fee worthy of his talents. But the real sticking point was West's huge financial demands for video rights to his performance, which were much more than the Gansevoort was willing to pay. The hotel ended up booking Lauryn Hill and even snagged Ciroc Vodka as a last-minute sponsor. "It worked out for everyone," said Gansevoort Hotel Group president Michael Achenbaum. West confirmed he'd appear at the Cosmopolitan's $25 million bash just hours before it began. After all the money issues in New York, sources said he wasn't paid to appear with Jay-Z and Coldplay, and even chartered his own private plane to the resort. West's rep didn't get back to us.
