After three weeks in court, both sides have finally given their closing arguments in the Remy Ma / Makeda Barnes-Joseph shooting trial...
Remy's lawyer, Ivan Fisher, clung to the fact that there was no proof the gun in question was Remy’s, even suggesting the gun may have belonged to Makeda. But, he conceded, even if it was Remy's gun, it went off by mistake, insisting to the jury that the shooting was an accident that happened while both women struggled over Makeda’s purse. “Their hands hit the car's rearview mirror during the tussle and the gun went off,” Fisher said. “There is no other explanation for why Remy would have chosen that unique moment in time to shoot her.” Makeda’s lawyer, Michael McIntosh, argued that Remy clearly had every intention of shooting his client because she cocked her gun before entering the victim's car. “She took every step you had to take to shoot somebody - cocking the gun, loading it with hollow-point bullets, racking the slide, pointing it at her victim and pulling the trigger." McIntosh also pointed out that Remy fled the scene and did not call for any help or take Makeda to the hospital after the incident. “The reason she ran was because she knew what happened in the car. Your friend is shot. Do you run or do you call 911?”
Jury deliberations are scheduled to begin today.
