Dr. Jan Adams, the doctor who performed Dr. Donda West's tummy tuck and breast reduction, is not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and he's been arrested for several DUIs. They say it took Dr. Adams 8 hours to perform Kanye's mama surgery when it only should have taken 4, an early indication that something had gone horribly wrong. But instead of sending Donda West to a recovery center, Dr. Adams sent her home. And although 911 was called, they say Kanye's mama was dead by the time the paramedics arrived. Dr. Adams, who's made appearances on Oprah Winfrey and the Discovery Channel's "Plastic Surgery: Before and After", says Donda West may have died from heart attack, pulmonary embolism or massive vomiting but maintains he's done nothing wrong.

1. Why didn't she research his credentials?
2. Why is someone her age having cosmetic surgery?
3. Why didn't she disclose all of her medical info when the previous doctor suggested clearance?
Again, just asking. As sad as this may be, I think this is a perfect example of how trying to cut corners is not a good idea when going under the knife.
By the way... What was wrong with her before? She looked just fine to me. I wonder why she thought she needed plastic surgery in the first place.

i hope this is not true, this is getting crazy. there are lot of surgery doctors out there worst then him. The question is why would a 58 y.o. women feel that she can handle this kind of surgery, she knew her condition. Other doctors said no, but she kept looking until she found someone. if you don't care about yourself, what makes you think someone else is. Who was she trying to look cute for at 58. I just hate to see it turn out this way.

I totally didn't understand why Dr. West didn't check on this man's credentials. Plus the fact that Dr. Anoo(whatever) told her he wouldn't do the surgery due to the fact that she had a heart problem. Why didn't she take that into concideration!?!?!?!?!?!

Where are the notes that substantiate the first doctors opinion? None of yall were the fuck there.. People, have some humanity and just fuckin stop it! This man was a expert guest on Oprah, had his own show on Discovery Channel, performed other "high profile" surgeies... there were no red flags regarding his credibility. ( if yall did some fuckin research you would know this. The facts that he had DUI's and some judgements against him in the past has no bearing on anything. many doctors have medical malpractice suits pending, etc. this is not neccesarily indicative of a "bad doctor".

At this moment in time it might not be a popular thing to say, but cosmetic surgery in most cases isn't a necessity, its about vanity. Donda West didn't have to die like this it could have been avoided. And thats the saddest thing of all.

Wow, it appears that she died an unecessary death. Surgery is so serious. After years of suffering, I elected to have surgery and it was the scariest thing I've ever done. By the grace of God, I'm here today and I'm happy I did it but, I could have died on the operating table or later due to complications.
Now due to the surgery and aging, my body is less than perfect but, so it's ok, I have my life and that's what's important.
When I was preparing for surgery, I went on-line and checked my surgeon's credentials but I didn't even think about my checking out the anesthesiologist. Hell, I didn't even know who it was going to be.
I'm just saying, I'm sure Ms West didn't just pick someone out of the phone book. The doctor is highly visable and probably highly regarded in his industry. So I'm sure she trusted him. Maybe it was her body that betrayed her, not her doctor.
this is so sad, sometimes when a close one dies it doesn't hit you right a way. I will definetely have him in my prayers.

As a result, I needed a FULL tummy tuck (which wraps around my waist to include all teh love handles) because of all the excess skin. Now I am not saying that thi swas her case, because its my own. but my surgically induced flat stomach was not about vanity. we need to stop generalizing and simplifying things without knowing ALL the facts.
I dont think a tuck and titties was life threatening for her,,,especially if other docs turned her down

Your situation is a perfect example of cosmetic surgery being very useful. You had a life threatening disease and HAD to have surgery to save your life. And the cosmetic surgery came in handy to fix your abdominal area after the life-saving surgery. Your cosmetic surgery had NOTHING to do with vanity. From the reports so far concerning Dr. West's death, however, that isn't the case.
Eight hours is a very long time to be under general anesthesia without being in a hospital setting where your vital signs can be closely monitored. This is so tragic.

It will all come out in the wash. This is tragic for Dr. West and her family and tragic for Dr. Adams as well. You do not have to be board certified, many physicians are not. Secondly, getting DUIs does not mean you are not a skilled, competent professional. Finally, people die in surgery OFTEN. It does not mean the surgeon did anything wrong. Death does not always mean malpractice. I pray both families involved will endure this storm.

Seriously, I love Plastic Surgery: Before and After on the Disc. Health channel, but I somehow NEVER liked Jan Adams. He seemed too smug and egotistical to me, just not very nice.
I know lots of plastic surgeons have those characteristics, but this is 1 guy I disliked. (Seen his work too, he truly isn't great AT ALL)
That said, I found myself googling him over the summer to see if he were married (or gay). Don't know the details of Ms. west's pasing, but clearly Dr. Adams's past has come to light to haunt him. TMZ's already descended on his azz like vultures.

Where did he go to Med school?
He could have been board-certified in an area other than plastic surgery. Because plastic surgery is so profitable, many doctors than aren't specialists in plastic surgery (maybe they are specialists in other areas) begin doing plastic surgery. It is like your podiatrist deciding to remove your wisdom tooth, or a dermatologist deciding to do your C-section.
Doctors need to have specific training and experience in the area of work that they are actually going to do on you. Even the guy who is good at giving nose jobs, may not be skilled at tummy tucks.
She should have had her surgery in the hospital and not as an "out patient."
Depending on how complicated the surgery will be, patients can go home the same day if they have a tummy tuck OR a breast reduction. But they should stay in a hospital overnight when both procedures are done at the same time.
A patient needs to be monitored closely after having these combined procedures. The best place to do this is the hospital. Dr. Adams know this. I wonder whose idea it was not to have this done in the hospital.
And Dr. West should have seen an internist--as another doctor requested--to make sure she was in good health before having surgery.
Still, Dr. Adams, the jerk who operated on Dr. West for eight hours (what was he doing all that time???), he gets all the blame for this mess. I hope his license is revoked.

^^^WTF difference does it make where he went to Medical School. He looks like he's in his 40's or 50's himself, so med school was probably a long time ago. That has absolutely nothing to do with this case. Medical licenses are earned through YEARS of blood, sweat, and tears not to mention $100's of thousands of dollars. I have never heard of this guy before this incident. He was obviously skilled and well-regarded to have been an expert consultant on several shows. As 8:45pm said, many doctors practice in areas other than their original specialties (and are not board certified in those areas), even though 8:45's analogies were off. Maybe something did go wrong during the surgery. Or perhaps Dr. West's prior health history of cardiac problems contributed to her death. Dr. shopping is usually a very bad idea. She could have had complications from the surgery. Not every patient can be saved. Sometimes it is NO ONE's fault when they die. The coroner will take FOREVER to release the results of the inquest.

1. Board Certification is not required to perform the procedures Dr. Adams performed on Dr. West.
2. Given her risk factors, Dr. West should have had these procedures performed in a hospital. If she had, she MIGHT still be alive.
(What oftentimes makes elective cosmetic surgery so "affordable" is that most of the procedures may be performed in a doctor's office, rather than a hospital. Assuming that she was not afaraid of hospitals, Dr. West's decision not to go that route may have cost her her life.)
3. As above, Dr. Adams should have insisted that Dr. West be hospitalized—assuming he knew of her risk factors—for his own protection, as well as hers.
4. If complications encountered during surgery resulted in the increased time (8 hours vs. the expected 4), then again, post-surgical hospitalization seems mandatory.
5. Dr. West was learned, accomplished and a very determined woman, according to many accounts. It's very difficult to prevent people of that type from getting what they want.

I feel sorry for Mr. West loss. I am very close to my mom and losing her would be so hard. Now as for responsibility I have had plastic surgery and if the doctor told me that I could not have the surgery because of my health I would NOT have done it. She went to different doctor because becuase she wanted it. She did not take care of herself. Did she even check his credentials. You have to these days everybody is preforming plastic surgery. When I did my researchs I found some quacks out there. Once again I am sorry that this woman lost her life for vanity. When I had my surgery I told everybody that I loved them becuase I knew that I could die to.
Those of us who know Dr. Adams well have an informed opinion. Well, he has always seemed more interested in drinking, partying, skirt chasing, and Hollywood fame than anything else. He did train in General Surgery and in Plastic SUrgery but NEVER EVER passed either an annual inservice examination or a board certification exam as far as I know. My direct observations have left me with the opinion that he has always been lazy and arrogent insofar as his medical and surgical practices. He is a perfect example of one who has gone incredibly far based on charisma more than anything else (including knowlege, hard accomplishments, tangible successes, acceptable test scores, moral clarity, etc. etc. etc.) I know the Dr. and my opinions are well founded and all based on direct personal experience.

Her reasoning to have the surguries is irrelevant. Ones reasoning is ones choice.
If he was "certified" he should have asked her for her medical history, an authorized copy and requested the recommendations from her other opinions given her age. This would have prevented this from happening or his name would have not been involved. He needs to take accountibility, because he is accountable. Dr. Phil isn't board certified, so that isn't required to have a show. He's got a history of malpractice issues. I dont know why she went to him. I guess thats something their family and the public will always wonder.

We never get it as black professionals and even business owners. yeah, you may have the knowledge to open a business and even the good sense to get a medical degree in the USA but it is only the beginning of your hard work, continous education and so forth. We have the attitude that I am the boss now so I have made it. Then when someone points out our obvious faults, shortcomings and failures we are offended. The man should have been studying for exams and working hard to build his skills and so forth. I truly believe the informed opinion as well. He messed up bad.
